Murshidabad is a city in the Murshidabaddistrict of the West Bengal. The city of Murshidabad located on the Sourthernbank of Bhagirathi, a tributary of the Gangaes River.  It is divided into two nearly equal portionsby the Bhagirathi, the ancient channel of the Ganges. The tract to the west,known as the rarh consists of hard clay and nodular limestone. Thegeneral level is high, but interspersed with marshes and seamed by hilltorrents. The Bagri or eastern half belongs to alluvial plains of easternBengal.  The city today is a center foragriculture, handicrafts and sericulture.
